Our Karate program is for children 6 years and up, teens and adults (children under 6 see our Little Ninja program). Classes are held by belt rank - we do not separate the adults and kids (except with certain curriculum and partner pairing). Teens and adults can be excellent role models for the younger ones.
Our Karate program is led by Cory DeMeyers. Mr. DeMeyers is a Kyo Sa Nim (“certified instructor”) - a title attained in 2008 through a rigorous PKSA certification program. He is a third degree black belt (“Sam Dan”) who has been training in the martial art of Tang Soo Do for close to twenty years. Gup classes are also taught by E Dan Bob Stewart and E Dan Laura Stewart. During the class, the instructors receive support from their CIT/Storm team, a special group of upper belt children and adults who are specially trained to assist or help lead portions of the class.
Our standard curriculum covers Basic Actions, Hyungs (forms), Sparring Cominations, Il Soo Sik (one-step sparring combinations for teens/adults), Ho Sin Sul (Self-Defense), Terminology and In Neh (Endurance). In addition we teach our younger students the importance of stranger awareness and about verbal & physical boundaries. And beyond the kicks/punches/blocks, our students learn how to develop every aspect of self through the PKSA Personal Development Creed, Tang Soo Do’s Ten Articles of Faith and PKSA’s Goal Setting Creed.
Students can attend as many classes as they want each week (at their belt level and lower). But it is important to attend at least 2 days a week as the curriculum is split into two parts over the week - Mon/Tues and Wed/Thurs. The whiteboard will show what training will occur on these two sets of days. All classes are 45 minutes. A typical class consists of about 10 minutes of warm-up and stretching; 30 minutes of class material and 5-10 minutes of fun (e.g., game).
As the student's knowledge of the Tang Soo Do fundamentals, techniques and terminology grow, they will be tested as they progress through the five belt levels. Belt testing occurs 4 times a year (usually February, May, August and November). Master Richard Collins Jr. (the PKSA organization President) or another PKSA Master make a special trip out to administer the test. Students are tested on everything they have learned for their current belt level. Belt promotions usually occur about a week after testing. Students who meet all of the training, testing and maturity requirements can expect to be asked to test for their black belt in 48 months.
Our school is not only a family, but it is made up of families. We encourage parents to join and receive the same mental and physical benefits as their children. When family members train together, they develop stronger relationships while learning Tang Soo Do.
Special discounts are offered to families! After the first two paid members, each additional family member can train for free! Jump in and train as a family and earn your black belt together.
